FDA Recall: Allergan BIOCELL Breast Implants

Citing a concerning rise in the occurence of a rare form of cancer, the FDA has requested Allergan to voluntarily recall all Natrelle BIOCELL Textured Breast Implants and Tissue Expanders from the market. The FDA recall was based on the alarming rise in the worldwide occurence of a cancer known as “Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL), a serious and potentially life-threatening illness. So far, out of the 573 cases of BIA-ALCL reported worldwide, 481 of the patients were reported to have Allergen BIOCELL breast implants.

BIA-ALCL is not breast cancer- it is a type of Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma (cancer of the immune system). In most cases, BIA-ALCL is found in the scar tissue and fluid near the implant, but in some cases, it can spread throughout the body. Symptoms to be on the watch for include persistent swelling or pain near the breast implant. If you experience any of these symptoms, or other changes, talk to your health care provider regarding the need for further evaluation.
